About Us
Local residents in the early 1900s would gather at their homes to hold weekly prayer meetings. By 1918, the congregation had gotten too large for worship services to be held in people’s homes. Therefore, members joined together to purchase land and build a chapel that would be able to suit their needs. On May 16, 1919, The North Brunswick Religious and Civic Association was founded.
In 1921, the NBRCA purchased the Sunday school building of the New Brunswick Presbyterian Church, which was rebuilt on a new foundation to create Berdine’s Corner Chapel. The chapel also served as a meeting place for many community groups, including what would eventually become Engine Company Number One of the North Brunswick Volunteer Fire Department and the North Brunswick First Aid & Rescue Squad.
In April of 1945, The Reformed Church in America accepted the North Brunswick Religious and Civic Association into affiliation, thus The Reformed Church of North Brunswick was born. Located one block up from the present church site on Cedar Avenue, Berdine’s Chapel housed all worship activities until the new church building was built on the corner of Laurel Place and Cedar Avenue in 1959. The chapel continued to be used as a Sunday school until the educational wing was added to the present day church in 1967. Over one hundred years later, the ideals of the North Brunswick Religious and Civic Association and Berdine’s Chapel continue in The Reformed Church of North Brunswick in the form of THE SANCTUARY of North Brunswick, is a diverse congregation with members that can trace their roots to over 10 different nationalities.
