Our History

Church Reflection

THE SANCTUARY of North Brunswick is a bi-lingual, multicultural congregation serving the greater “Brunswick” area.  Located two blocks from Georges Road, our church is by Babbage Park, on Laurel Place and Cedar Avenue.

Once known as the Reformed Church of North Brunswick, our congregation celebrates 91 years of worship and service to the North Brunswick community.  During these blessed years, our congregation reached out to its neighbors with the love of God, a gospel of salvation and a message of hope that became evident in our church’s key role in the development of the Township’s Volunteer Fire Department and its  First Aid Squad.

Today, THE SANCTUARY continues to be a beacon of light in our community and the surrounding area. We celebrate two glorious worships; one in English and the other bi-lingually. (Spanish/English)  We praise the Lord with both traditional and contemporary music and most importantly, we are committed to serving our families with a caring Sunday School for children and a fun-filled, spiritually nurturing youth program. In addition, we are actively involved with the North Brunswick Township Food Pantry and several other local missions.

We encourage you to learn more about THE SANCTUARY and take time to visit one of our inspiring Sunday worships. We would love to meet you and your family as together we come closer to God.  We assure you that your experience will be a positive one, and God will bless you abundantly. We hope to see you.

Our History

Our church was founded on May 16, 1919, as the North Brunswick Religious and Civic Association. The members began holding weekly prayer meetings in 1918.  They had to organize to purchase land and build a chapel to house their worship services, which had grown too large to be held in their homes.

In 1921, the association purchased the Sunday school building of the New Brunswick Presbyterian Church, which the members dismantled and rebuilt on a new foundation to create the Berdine’s Corner Chapel. It also served as a meeting place for many community groups, including the one that formed Engine Company Number One of the North Brunswick Volunteer Fire Department in 1925. Thirty years later, another set of meetings resulted in formation of the North Brunswick First Aid & Rescue Squad.

Located on Cedar Avenue, one block up the hill from the present church site, the chapel housed all worship activities until 1959, when the present sanctuary was built. The original building continued to be used as a Sunday school until the education wing was built in 1967.  The original structure now houses the Odd Fellows Lodge.

Accepted for affiliation with The Reformed Church in America in April 1945, the group that first gathered in 1918 became The Reformed Church of North Brunswick. Ninety-one years later, it continues as a place of worship in the Berdine’s Corner area with members that can trace their roots to over 20 different nationalities.
